The I-69 Thumb Region economic development partnership has been funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) 1) to convene area employers, workforce development agencies, education, and government partners to discuss successes and challenges in workforce supply and 2) to seed fund regional projects to improve workforce supply in 2018.
This MEDC funding provides us an opportunity to take action on some of the conclusions drawn from our January 24, 2018 Talent Forum that focused on workforce supply solutions within the region. Priority workforce supply factors that were identified at the forum are:
- Underemployment – Assist residents working part-time and at low wages with strategies to advance into higher paying, full-time jobs with benefits.
- Retirement/Succession Planning – Assist employers to manage an aging workforce, plan for succession, and encourage job skills training that utilizes the expertise of those approaching retirement.
We are in a position to fund two or three short-term projects with approximately $38,000 in seed funding.
